The Spectrum Network to build accessible garden this spring

The Spectrum Network is building an accessible garden in Decorah this spring. Designed for persons with limited mobility and other obstacles, the Spectrum Wellness Garden on Railroad Street will offer clients in the organization's Adult Day Services program opportunities to experience the health benefits of gardening. The garden will also be open to visiting groups from nursing homes, schools, and other organizations.

The Wellness Garden will feature raised beds, wide paths, and trellises for improved access; and flowers and herbs for sensory experience. The Spectrum Network staff members will help clients realize the physical, psychological, cognitive, and social benefits of gardening. Staff will also use garden produce to teach cooking, healthy eating, and food safety in an on-site kitchen.

The project will broaden access to the health benefits of gardening in Decorah, said The Spectrum Network Executive Director Toni Smith. "Gardening is a wonderfully restorative activity and a common pastime here in northeast Iowa. But if you have a hard time sitting at ground level, or are in a wheelchair, or have intellectual difficulties, gardening probably isn't accessible to you," said Smith.

The Pepperfield Project of Decorah is the organization's partner in implementation. In addition to overseeing planning and planting, Pepperfield will donate seeds and plants. The garden advisory committee includes David Cavagnaro of Pepperfield, and Stephanie Travers, Luther College assistant professor of psychology. Travers conducted an accessible garden project at Aase Haugen Homes in Decorah last year. Other contributors include The City of Decorah, which is providing soil and mulch; and Swinging Hammers Construction, which donated materials for the raised beds.

The Spectrum Network seeks additional businesses and individuals to donate supplies and materials; help build structures and maintain the garden; and make financial contributions to help cover construction costs.
