Senator Harkin endorses book of disability essays
The Spectrum Network has received an endorsement for From My Perspective: Essays about Disability from Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). Harkin is author of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
"From My Perspective is a wonderful compilation of essays that gives the reader a view into the lives of some very brave, very intelligent souls," said Harkin. "As we approach the twentieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, it's an honor to read about the lives they are able to lead, and how everyday assumptions about disability can sometimes become barriers to allowing people to fully participate in community life."
Published last August in Decorah, From My Perspective includes essays by seventeen authors who have a disability or provide support as a parent or other caregiver. The book was featured on Iowa Public Radio's "The Exchange" on June 23. It was also used as a classroom text by Wartburg College this spring. The collection was edited by Rachel Faldet and Kris Schanilec.
