Authors read from essays about disabilities
Over sixty-five people gathered at Decorah Public Library on October 29 for a reading and book signing by authors of From My Perspective: Essays about Disability. The book is the outcome of writing workshops held by The Spectrum Network earlier this year, and includes seventeen essays on aspects of living with disability. View photos from the event. Among those who read were John Kane, Monica Roderick, Faye Bockman, Chris Wyse, Terri Larson, Charla Hageman, June Rovang, and Ron Munsterman. Also attending were essayists Dave Hageman, Joann Hagen and Kathy Donovan, The Spectrum Network's executive director Toni Smith, and co-editors Rachel Faldet and Kris Schanilec.Smith says that the audience was riveted. "To hear these stories, you can't help but be inspired by them, and by the tenacity of individuals who overcome obstacles to lead full, productive lives. There was a lot of dignity and joy in the room."
The Spectrum Network published the book as part its thirty-fifth anniversary celebration, with financial support from the Winneshiek County Community Foundation.
Cresco Public Library will hold a reception for the book on Saturday, December 5, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm; as well as for an exhibit of artwork created by clients of The Spectrum Network. The exhibit is on display through December 18.
